Milwaukee, Wisconsin has a rich and vibrant Hip Hop history that has often been overlooked. There have been many different documented offerings that dig deep into the past and the who, when, where, what m why and how of it all.
We are working in alignment with all efforts to uplift our stories and preserve this beautiful , life saving thing called; Milwaukee Hip Hop.
There are many similar regional and national efforts and official archives like ours. We are checking out everywhere and everything, we love to see it! Thanks to the collaborative efforts of TRUE Skool and the Wisconsin Black Historical Society Museum, this vital piece of Milwaukee's cultural heritage is finally getting the attention and proper place for the physical and digital preservation it deserves.
Check out the behind the scenes early interview (audio or video)
featuring TRUE Skool & WI Black Historical Society Museum discussing their intentional approach to this community driven data collection/research and archiving and method. This is very different from the typical ways museums, research partners, funders and community orgs collaborate, if they ever do.
One of our primary goals of the project is to provide public access to this important living archive. By organizing "Archive Days", virtual and in person panels and exhibitions, the MKE Hip Hop Archive Project is preserving the past and present while sharing, educating, connecting and inspiring us all.
